Since our inception almost two years ago we have been on a relentless hunt for a more permanent and better equipped production facility here in Boston. Our vision of where and how we want Firefly to exist extends beyond the pure functionality of a space into the realm of an experience. Not just our everyday work experience, but the experience of our customers and everyone who enters the space.
Our current location on Wolcott Court has been an amazing launching pad for Firefly, but this past summer we found the perfect space to realize our vision. The new shop was formerly the Neponset Brass Foundry in Boston’s South Bay, specifically the area referred to by locals as “The Polish Triangle.” Many years ago Moen faucets were cast in this very building. It has been a few things since, but for the past few years it has been sitting vacant.
Dan Falvey, a legendary local furniture refinisher, whose factory sits adjacent to the foundry, recently purchased the building and gave us first dibs on the space. The scope of the project is huge, essentially a floor to ceiling rehab, inside and out.
Is this daunting… Yes.
Can we do this… No doubt.
To turn our dreams into a reality we hired designer and builder (and my wife) Alessandra Mondolfi to spearhead the project. When we approached her with the scope and vision of the project she asked us what we would like her role to be. We said: “We want you to do it all… everything.” She was like “whoa,” and we were like “yeah,” and she was like “okay.” Well… I left out a few expletives, but we began.
Alessandra has spent countless hours with us documenting our processes, assessing our needs and designing and building out the resulting space and workstations. Following her delicately choreographed timeline, we plan on being moved in and having the new space fully operational by the end of the year, all while minimizing downtime and its effect on bicycle production at our current shop.
This is a big one.
Every wall, every workstation, every electrical socket… we are starting from scratch. No bullshit, no corners cut. Access to this kind of space gives us the opportunity to design and build our ultimate framebuilding workshop from concept to completion. A space that suits our needs, and yours, like no other. We plan on doing just that.
We would like to invite you to journey with us, first person, as we advance towards the realization of our vision. Everyday, from now until the project is completed we will be posting images and explanations of our progress on a visual blog dedicated solely to this project. Check back here for more detailed looks at every custom built workstation as they come together. And finally, expect a hell of a house warming party when we’re done. Hop on the bus early and catch the whole trip because the New Year isn’t really that far away and a lot is about to happen.
