Introducing the newest category in our growing lineup of high performance custom bicycles: the Firefly Titanium Mountain Bike...
The design process for this bike began with an advanced approach to the titanium disc dropouts. We worked closely for months with the infamous Peter Verdone of PVD Designs dialing in every ounce of performance, brake compatibility and shedded gram after gram of weight. Our goal was to get to the essence of their function.
The resulting 7mm thick 6Al/4V titanium machined dropouts weigh in at a feathery 156.2 grams per pair.
On the front end of the bike we are offering both 44mm InSet and standard 1.125″ diameter head tubes. The 44mm inset head tubes are quickly becoming the new standard for mountain bikes, allowing the use of oversized tapered steerers that are found on many of the high performance suspension forks now readily available. The larger diameter fork steerers exponentially increase front end stiffness and overall fork strength. We are also gusseting the headtubes at the downtube junction to increase the front end rigidity and strength to match the burliness of these new generation forks. Each gusset is hand cut at precise angles to match up to the geometry of the joint.
Like all of the other frames we make each Titanium Mountain Bike is double-pass T.I.G. welded by hand in our Boston shop.
Below are three examples of some frames we have finished recently:
Above and below are a couple of 26″ frame sets. Both frames are zirconium bead blasted with polished anodized graphics and matching Firefly Titanium Seatposts.
The drive side seatstay has welded-in stay splitter making it possible to add and remove the belt from the frame.
Both the frame and seatpost feature matching polished graphics with blue anodizes details.
The legacy of the cutting-edge handmade titanium hardtail mountain bike lives on in New England.
Right here in Boston.
